Concertmaster
Classes

“Thank you for your interest in my Violin Pathways Concertmaster Program.

This degree of study and access to my insight, experience and time is not possible in any other traditional setting, such as school classes, summer music camps, or masterclasses, because of normal institutional and organizational constrictions.

After 35 years of teaching at the Tanglewood Institute,The New England Conservatory, and Boston University, my current classes and work with students has proven to be significantly more valuable and productive to me and to students with the possibility of far better outcomes.

I am very excited to be able to work more closely in a less restrictive environment with any violinist who is willing to put in the work and meet the challenges that I introduce.

If you are interested in applying for this program or have any questions, please contact me below. “

This is an intense overview of concertmaster repertoire and inside knowledge and
workings of the concertmaster position. It is enough time to be flexible with many
aspects and allows for questions and discussion of topics related to a
concertmaster’s musicianship and training that a school class cannot address.

Malcolm's Approach

A foundation to Malcolm’s approach is that musical and violinistic inspirations should be the prime motivation to acquiring the technical means to fully realize and interpret the amazing music that is played on the violin.

It is necessary to work hard on foundational and fundamental musical approaches and the technical set-up and movements to acquire those tools.

Musical, great violin playing is comprised of many elements which need to be developed progressively. Example, bow division, usage and dynamics are integral to phrasing and meaningful music making. These can be taught and improved at any age and should be developed without emotional and physical tensions that can defeat many violinist’s efforts. Technical facility, fluency and freedom must be developed in tandem with musical goals to reach ultimate musical expression.

The Solution

Study with Malcolm and develop solid fundamental musical approaches and technique necessary to achieve those fundamentals. These include: learning about sound and the singing voice of the violin, melody, rhythm, harmony, phrasing, communication and projection, expression and character of music. Emphasis is put on the cornerstones of set-up (holding the violin and bow) and relaxed freedom of movement.

Malcolm uses the abundance of pedagogical and repertoire works found in beginning studies, pieces and scales to the great etude and solo repertoire. His in depth and personal knowledge of great teachers, such as, Carl Flesch, Max Rostal and Ivan Galamian, help him develop and tailor the most beneficial, supportive program for each violinist.
